Tohoku Forum for Creativity Call for Programme Proposals for 2016
The Tohoku Forum for Creativity (TFC) is the first International Visitor Research Institute in Japan. It results of a Tohoku University initiative that started in October 2013 in order to promote the institution as a knowledge-sharing platform, open to the world, where people with diverse disciplines can gather, learn, and create.
The TFC is currently inviting proposals for three thematic programmes in the 2016 academic year (April 2016 to March 2017) in any branch of research including social sciences, humanities, physical sciences, and life sciences. Junior researchers such as graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are especially encouraged to participate in these programmes.
These thematic programmes should have a long-term impact far beyond the programme itself, through important breakthroughs, new research directions and collaborations. One of the explicit goals of TFC is to overcome the normal barriers between individual research areas and to extend interdisciplinary co-operation by bringing together researchers with very different backgrounds and expertise. In the past, such programmes attracted several Nobel Laureates such as Prof. Steven Weinberg and Prof. David Gross (see here for a list of current and past programmes).
Each programme runs for approximately three months, either in the spring period (April to June), summer period (July to September), fall period (October to December), or winter period (January to March).
Thematic programmes are expected to include the following activities:
- 1. The invitation of 50-100 researchers for research stays dedicated to discussion and collaborative work related to the programme theme, including approximately five key contributors to be invited for one-month stays
- 2. Tutorials for students and postdoctoral researchers
- 3. One to two week workshops
- 4. An International conference on the programme theme
- 5. Public events for the local community, when feasible
Each programme is allocated a budget for subsistence and travel expenses for organizers and invitees. The extent of financial support from TFC for each thematic programme will be up to 15,000,000 JPY.
Submission deadline: 30 September 2014
