This is a 3(+2) year-term position (postdoctoral or project scientist) supported by CREST funding from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) in the context of analyzing “big data”. We are exploring the new frontier field of statistical and computational cosmology using data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Survey (300 nights in 2014-19) on the Subaru Telescope. Kavli IPMU is one of the leading institutions involved in the HSC Survey together with NAOJ, Princeton, and Institutes in Taiwan.In anticipation of the era of big data, we would like to develop applications which can optimally extract cosmological parameters from the observed data. We have multiple appointments, and we seek talented individuals who have a strong background in at least one of the following fields: 1) Imaging Data Visualization, 2) Database and 3) Astro-Statistics or Simulations. Candidates with expertise in data visualization techniques for big data, database management, and/or with skills in web interface development are particularly encouraged to apply.

For positions in 1) and 2), a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s or Ph.D degree) in Physics, Astronomy or Computer Science or a related field is required. The candidate must be familiar with database and web applications. For position 3), a Ph.D. degree and experience with large simulations is required.

Successful applicants will have access to the ongoing HSC survey data and will work closely with HSC team, Kavli IPMU members and CREST team members (Tsukuba Univ, Institute for Statistics and Mathematics and NTT Laboratories).
